Effectively communicate and collaborate to deliver, market, and advocate for library and information services
Outcome 5b: Participate in an advocacy campaign, within or outside the classroom.
In 777: Issues of Access, Advocacy, and Policy in Youth Services we discussed, at length, the many ways in which advocacy ties into the daily role of being a librarian. From our interactions with patrons to our participation in nation-wide campaigns, you cannot disconnect "librarian" from "advocate." The artifact that I have chosen was a service statement, wherein we were instructed to "identify an issue implicating young people’s access to library materials and/or services, explain the difficulties and obstacles presented, and advocate a particular solution." In this letter, I am asking a library board to consider participation in ALSC's Dia de los Ninos/Dia de los Libros. I am advocating simultaneously for the patrons and the youth services department, to the benefit of both. I learned that persuasive writing is based in knowing your community, being able to identify both a need and a solution, and offering an opportunity for the benefit of all parties involved.

Outcome 5f: Listen to achieve common understanding.
In LIS 721: Library Materials for Children our class was made up of a wonderfully diverse group of individuals from all kinds of libraries. In the course of this class, I learned so much from hearing my classmate's experiences, both as children and as librarians to children. I feel that the broad spectrum of experiences represented in that class helped me to develop a critical eye when reading and selecting materials. For my final project, I created a bibliography of materials that reflected the immigrant experience in the United States. The artifact that I have chosen for this outcome is my reflection paper on that process. It demonstrates the awareness that I gained regarding the availability of materials that reflect the diversity of the American experience.

Outcome 5g: Apply technology to connect, communicate and collaborate.
One of my favorite classes during my time in the program was a special topics class, 805: Technology: Digital Content and Creation. This class was an intensive crash course into using readily available content creation tools with the understanding that at the end of the class, students would be able to teach a technology-based session. I learned that editing can be your best friend, and that editing video is difficult when you have a subject who talks with their hands. I had never worked with a Mac before, so learning to use the different interface was good fun. I enjoy dabbling around with digital content creation, and this class gave me the opportunity to try new tools. I plan to take the skills that I have learned in this class and build upon them in order to bring new classroom content to the library. The artifact that I have included is the podcast that I created, wherein I interviewed my children on their reading habits and then pondered how reading habits are developed. Podcasts are hugely popular, according to MacWorld in 2013* there were more than one billion iTunes podcast subscribers. Creating a podcast requires minimal hardware and could be easily taught to patrons.
